Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in 2017, and quickly became the number one streamed track in just 6 months. The track is a mixture of reggaeton and pop did not only bring attention to reggaeton, but also attracted attention to Latin music generally. In 2015, there were only two songs that were predominantly Spanish-language on the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017, however, 19 mostly Spanish tracks made it into the Top 100 In 2020, there were 41 songs. Following the time that Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, popular artists started to work with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny collaborated in the project MIA MIA (2018) as did Madonna and Maluma on Medellin, Madonna and Maluma collaborated on Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. Certain reggaeton performers were unhappy about the trend toward mainstream music in 2020. A new band, Rauw alejandro, was determined to alter the direction of music. The genre often incorporated elements of various genres, as well as electronic dance.
